The Engineering Process at TWI

The engineering process is a series of steps engineers take to solve the problem. This includes finding an objective as well as determining constraints and then developing, building and testing. This is an important part of any project at TWI and assists us in ensuring that our projects meet the highest performance and safety standards. This is especially important for New York City projects as they must be in compliance with strict standards.

In this stage students study the issue they’re faced with to comprehend what the problem is and gather information. It’s an open-ended, centered on the student approach that reorients the classroom away from the traditional science curriculum.

Students brainstorm ways to solve the issue. This is accomplished through discussions and writing on a whiteboard, or by using software. Some ideas may not work, but that’s fine because it gives them the chance to experiment with others to find an alternative.

After analysing the results of their research and brainstorming, the group decides on a method to create and build. It could be done printed on paper, using the aid of CAD software or the creation of a prototype, which could be physical or virtual. This is an exciting process for students as they are able to create something tangible that will allow students to test their ideas.

This is where engineers have to be careful because they are bound by constraints like time costs, tools, and resources. Engineers also need to keep in mind that their ideas need to be secure and effective to be effective in the real world.
